~PART 21~

Maan are you even listening. Maan snapped out of his reverie, surprised that Dia was still there.

Maan- Sorry, I zoned out.

Dia was concerned, standing up she came to Maan’s side and squeezed his shoulder. Why are you so out of focus? Is something wrong?

No, there is just a lot on my mind.

That’s why I tell you not to work so hard although you are never going to heed me on this.

He grinned up at her. You know me so well. Dia rolled her eyes. You proceed with the plans drawn. I’ll catch up later on.

Dia nodded and patted his cheek. I will update you on the progress. Take care. With that said she left and only that much time it took for Maan to revert back to his thought.

Geet was depressed about something. As he remembered the pain on her face his own grief hit him right through the chest. What was she hiding? Why wouldn’t she tell even after him enquiring about it?

He felt frustrated, angry and-unreasonably-he was hurt, there was a pinch of remorse too to make the dish that much spicier.

Had he pushed her so far that she wouldn’t share her problems with him? Not like he had left any other option at her disposal. Regardless, it was good and what he had wanted. Yes, he… wanted that. He was happy and satisfied. Problem was what he felt was no way near what he was supposed to feel. Her smile was lost somewhere and although he had done nothing, Maan felt it was his fault. He wanted her smile back.

Picking up his mobile, he stared at her picture caressing it softly. One day when she was sitting in the garden in midst of beautiful flowers enjoying the evening breeze and laughing at the antics of the two cats she had befriended as they fought n chased the butterflies he had taken the liberty to take a snap without her knowledge. In that stolen moment, she looked young, carefree, content and happy. Her eyes were twinkling, face glowing and hairs blowing in the slow wind. He wished he could have heard her laughter but- His mind had willed him umpteen times to delete the pic but some things weren’t just in your control.

Maan looked at his watch and it was still just 6, too early to go back home. Geet would probably think he had gone nuts if she didn’t believe that already.

So he just came out to take a stroll on the road he wasn’t accomplishing anything in the office anyway. KC was located in an up class and busy part of the city and there was a mall only a few blocks ahead. He stood outside torn between going in to buy a gift for her and turning back going empty handed giving her another reason to feel dejected. Eventually giving up the fight, he went inside the mall.

Geet was all dressed up for her dysfunctional, first karwachaut. Since morning it had been like this, instead of Divya, Dadimaa had prepared sargi for her. Geet had no expectations from her mother-in-law but finding out that Dadimaa had actually stepped out of her room for her was a really pleasant surprise. At least there was someone who cared for her and apparently didn’t have any reasons to hide it.

Looking into the mirror she wore the earrings in her ears and slid the red bangles in her hands. She didn’t have much jewelry but the sari was quite heavy-a gift from Dadimaa-and all that mattered was the magalsutra in her neck.

Geet took her puja thaal and kept Maan’s pic in it because… she knew he wouldn’t come. A part of her said he would and a bigger part of her hoped the same but she was in no position to get her hopes high as in the end they would most probably be crushed. Surely enough Maan was somewhere busy in his stupid work, the thought of puja or Geet not even crossing his mind for once.

As Geet came on the terrace she had to wait a while for the moon to come up. Sky was clear with countless stars flickering on its wide expanse. This night would have been so beautiful if she wasn’t alone, she thought sadly. Moon finally decided to show its face; in no way she had expected Maan to appear magically same time. Eyes widened, she gaped at his profile. Maan smiled a little, awkwardly.

She actually poked his arm to make sure he was real. Her mouth fell open. He was indeed very real in casual jeans and a button down slik shirt which meant he hadn’t just come but had reached early enough to change for the puja.

Maan shifted uncomfortably. She was looking so pretty in the sari. He could help- having a mind of their own his eyes disobediently skimmed over her body. Geet blushed hoping that she looked good and getting caught he blushed embarrassed for such a blatant scrutiny.

They stood there in complete silence for a while and Maan was the one to break it. The moon is up. Geet tore her eyes away from her husband n glanced up remembering that there was a puja to be done. *Ho sakta hai mai yeh theek se na karu* She warned. *Dadimaa ne mujhe bataya hai k puja kaise karte hai aur maine dusri aurto ko pehle karte dekha hai par yeh mera first time hai.* And she was quite nervous about it and now he was here too; what if she made a fool of herself, he would think why he married her. She pouted looking at Maan. Maan chuckled and it made him look… adorable. She was dead.

Maan- Tumhari tarah mera bhi first time hai. And don’t worry, if you did a blunder I won’t even know.

Feeling a little better, she nodded lifting the thaal.

I see you hadn’t expected me to come. He commented without thought witnessing his photo in the plate. Geet turned red, ashamed. It’s not that she didn’t trust him but more like she didn’t trust her luck. It’s okay, Geet. I don’t blame you. Mai waise bhi inn sab baato aur rituals me believe nai karta. I came just for you. That was enough to boast her mood, a little, if not completely.

One by one she did all the rituals and he stood patiently through it. Honestly, he didn’t have any knowledge of time. He was lost in her. She was doing everything so carefully totally involved with all her heart. He almost felt bad. Almost. In reality he was selfishly feeling blessed.

As she looked him through the sieve there was cute little smile playing on her lips as if it was the most exciting thing to do. The softness and whatever else it was there in her eyes stole his breath away.

In the end Maan had to make her drink water and feed her a piece of sweet. So he took the glass to her mouth and cupped her cheek to support her face while she drank. She felt jitters by the small touch. It was the gesture that made her heart swell. He fed her and then she bent down to touch his feet. But he stepped back and with his hands holding her shoulder pulled her straight. It came as a shock in too sensitive a moment for her. She jolted out of the dreamland, the bubble bursting. It was her right, how could he step back from it? Unless he… she had forgotten theirs wasn’t just another usual marriage, it was a tie he was stuck in. He didn’t came because she was his wife, he came because he didn’t want to disappoint her… just because he was good human being.

If there was someone else in her place he would have done the same.

His humanity made her eyes burn. It would have been better if he hadn’t come n given her hopes if for a few minutes.

You don’t have to touch my feet. I said I don’t believe in all this.Maan said not getting any reaction. She stared down at the ground suddenly looking solemn. He was trying to think what went wrong when she started to leave. Wait. He grabbed her wrist. Kya hua?

Geet tightened her lips together giving him an accusing glare. She tried to free her hand. With his other hand he took the plate from her and kept it back. Mera wo matlab nai tha. Bas I won’t like if you touched my feet. She turned her head away not ready to buy that. If he didn’t like couldn’t he let her do it for her happiness. He had come to the puja then he could have let her do this too, but no… Maan had done the wrong thing at wrong time without knowing. She was already emotionally wounded and his small act served as an extra blow that went too deep.

Mujhe batao hua kya hai? He felt extremely restless, not feeling good about her giving him the cold shoulder. He couldn’t take it. Mai help kar sakta hu. He said attempting to hide the desperation. Tum college kyu nai jaa rai?

Her eyes flicked to his and chin quivered. He knew!! A tear dropped down and she knocked it away from the back of her hand. He took a step close and she moved back. It was all it took for him to pull her into him and she didn’t resist. She cried. And strangely it felt completely right.
