PART 39

On her way home, Geet repeated to herself. It’s alright. It’s alright. You have been through worse. It’s alright. Only it wasn’t. The continuous chanting didn’t make anything better. She was breaking apart.

She entered the house and her ascend up the stairs was hasty. She let the tears loose only when she was inside the bathroom. A drop fell from her eye and after that it was a lost cause. She wailed loudly falling down on her hands and knees. Why it always happened to her? Was she cursed? Visions filled her mind. Scenes and sound she had kept locked at the back came knocking, forcing her into the past. She wanted Maan. She needed him. He would just wrap his arms around her, coo into her ears lovingly n everything will go away. He would make it all okay. But she couldn’t call him. He was not there when she was first raped n he is not here now. She was destined to be alone. Always.

So Geet imagined. She wrapped her arms around her torso and imagined it was Maan rocking her. She felt his lips on her temple, kissing the agony away.

Persistent knocks on the door brought her senses. Geet didn’t know if she had been there half-dead to the world on the bathroom for hours or minutes. She stood up on shaky legs n looked into the mirror. The woman looking back was so familiar, she felt like an old friend. She finger-combed her hairs then fingered the nasty bruise forming on her cheek where Dev had slapped her.

What is it? Geet asked coming out of the bathroom but without opening the room door.

Maan sir has been calling you. Nina’s snappy voice told. He asked me to tell you pick his call.

Geet pulled out the phone from her purse and surely it was ringing. She hadn’t heard it, too busy lying numb on the floor.

After clearing her throat she pressed the green button.

Why the damn you weren’t picking the phone?

The phone was on vibration. I didn’t see it.

And may I ask where in the hell you were after you left the house without the car and security?

I had forgotten my purse at the parlor. Felt like taking a walk so I didn’t take the car.

Do you know I have been going crazy here, worrying about you, calling you constantly in vain? I had to leave an important meeting because I had to track the whereabouts of my irresponsible wife. He was so mad.

Last time I checked it was you who needed the security not me. I didn’t ask you to spy on me 27/7. I am not your slave that I have to report to you my every move.

You don’t get any of this, do you? We’ll talk about this when I get home.

Yes, master. Geet hung up and wiped the tears. She felt like killing herself for talking to him like that when he was just looking after her. She had no other choice though. If she hadn’t fought, she would have cried and that would have been worse.

Maan came home late that night; Geet was thankful and already in bed. Leaving the lights closed he slipped into the bed still in office shirt and pants; he hadn’t even removed his socks. He must be really exhausted, Geet thought, closing her eyes. She prepared herself for the verbal lashing. What she hadn’t expected was an apology. I am sorry… for how I spoke to you on the phone. I know that you don’t like to be bossed around. But you have to understand. Those who want to harm me will try to harm you to get to me. He was talking to her like someone would to a self-destructive child. Her eyes started to get misty against all her efforts. Promise me you won’t ever do it again.

Geet just nodded knowing her voice would betray her.

Good. Maan pulled her into him and Geet had gotten her savanna. She bit back a whimper. He began to kiss her neck. The neck Dev had kissed, she shivered. Maan chuckled thinking it was due to him. It would have been if not for what had happened to her earlier that day. She felt soiled, violated. Totally unworthy of the man behind her.

You smell so wonderful. He said. It was maybe she had cleaned herself for hours under the shower. Fruitlessly. Dev’s touch didn’t wash off; it stayed there, imprinted on her very skin. And you feel so good too. He shifted so his body hugged her at all the right places, his hand moved under her top, skimming lightly below the plump breasts, all the while he kept kissing her neck and shoulder.

Maan, I am really tired.

Maan was instantly on alert. Why, what’s wrong? Are you sick? He asked concerned because she never really could say no to him. Whenever he touched her she melted like hot wax.

No. I am fine, just tired.

Oh. If he was disappointed, he didn’t show. It had been a long day for me too. Comeon, we’ll get a long, refreshing sleep. He wrapped his arms around her just like she wanted him to. Geet closed her eyes, silently telling him that she loved him to no ends and wished she had nothing to hide from him. But her secrets were so ugly, she couldn’t ever unveil them. I love you, my love. Maan murmured kissing her temple. In his embrace she was omnipotent; there she did what she thought was impossible. She slept.
